Curious Koi captures one of those small, unexpected moments that invites us to stop and look a little closer.

Three brilliantly colored koi move through a dark, richly textured pond surrounded by abstract aquatic leaves. At the center, one inquisitive koi seems to emerge directly toward the viewer—wide-eyed, expressive, and almost asking us to notice what is happening beneath the surface.

Layers of orange, coral, pink, gold, cream, and turquoise create the intricate markings of the fish, while deep greens and earthy tones give the water a quiet, mysterious depth. Loose brushwork and unexpected details keep the painting playful and contemporary rather than traditionally representational.

Like much of my work, Curious Koi explores the question: What does mindfulness look like? Sometimes it is peaceful contemplation. Sometimes it is simply being curious enough to notice something ordinary—and seeing it differently.

About the Inspiration

Koi have long been associated with perseverance, transformation, abundance, and moving through life's challenges with purpose. In Curious Koi, those traditional associations meet something a little more playful: curiosity.

The painting invites the viewer into the pond rather than simply asking them to observe it. The closer you look, the more color, texture, marks, and tiny moments begin to emerge.
